The proposed plan for use of the new greenspace in downtown Calumet has been released.
The space stretches between Fifth and Sixth Streets in the 300 block – just south of the Calumet Theatre.
The Sixth Street property had been vacant for some time. The Fifth Street property was formerly home to the Sterk Block, which included the Superior Lanes Bowling Alley.
That building collapsed, and was demolished in 2008. The land was donated to the Calumet Downtown Development Authority for use as a greenspace last year.
With help from Michigan American Water Company, Kalcich Contracting, Ace Hardware and the Village Streets Department the property was graded and grass planted shortly after it was acquired.
The Calumet Farmers Market has operated on the site this summer, while the DDA Greenspace Committee has been planning for future improvements, with assistance from the Keweenaw National Historical Park.
An outdoor open house to receive comments about the plan will be held Thursday between 5:30 and 7:30 next to the Calumet Theatre.
