The timeline for the potential construction of a utilities tunnel under the Straits of Mackinac has been extended by a significant amount of time.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, has been reviewing more than 17,000 submissions from the public it received about the project during an open comment period last year.
The Corps had initially planned to complete a draft environmental impact statement by the end of this year. Detroit District Commander Lt. Col. Brett Boyle says they now hope to have it ready by spring of 2025.
Enbridge Energy wants to build the tunnel to house a replacement for its aging Line 5 pipeline, which currently carries light crude oil and liquid natural gas across the lakebed at the bottom of the straits.
The Corps has released a summary of the comments received last year. See it here.
