A missing Hancock Township resident was located quickly Tuesday through Houghton County’s Project Lifesaver program.
Houghton County Sheriff Josh Saarinen said it took deputies just 28 minutes to track the signal from the individual’s transponder to their location, about seven-tenths of a mile away, through hilly, wooded terrain.
The person was alive and well.
The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Michigan DNR / Conservation Office, Michigan State Police Calumet post, and Station 80.
Project Lifesaver is designed to help locate at-risk individuals, in the event they wander away from caregivers. A small transponder is worn on the wrist or ankle that emits a radio frequency that can be tracked by first responders. It was recently introduced into the Keweenaw by the Portage Health Foundation.
The program is run by the non-profit Project Lifesaver International.
