Pride Week Events At Michigan Tech

Keweenaw PrideIt’s time for the annual Pride Week at Michigan Technological University.

Hosted by Keweenaw Pride, the week celebrates the LGBTQIA+ community with a variety of events beginning Monday, Oct. 10 through Saturday, Oct 15.

Events begin Monday with “Pledge to be an Ally” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Husky Statue on campus. Participants may sign a pledge to support the LGBTQIA+ community at Michigan Tech.

There will be a TED Talk at Canterbury House at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The evening features a TED Talk relating to LGBTQIA+ culture. A short discussion will follow.

A film and discussion on Drag Queen and King culture is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday in Fisher Hall 132. The film “Paris is Burning” will be shown, followed by a discussion to highlight Drag Queen and King culture, history and how drag is portrayed in the media.

Thursday’s event is “Drag Queen GO.” Based on the popular game “Pokemon GO” this game challenges you to find some “Queens.” Participants are challenged to take selfies with the posters of the queens around campus and email them to KP for prizes. Around campus there will be posters of the performers in Saturday’s Drag show.

Try out some “Identity Cupcakes.” Come have gourmet cupcakes and learn more about less-known LGBTQIA+ Identities from 11 a.m. to 1p.m. Friday at the Center for Diversity and Inclusion (Hamar House).

The highlight of Pride Week is 17th Annual Drag Show at 8 p.m. Saturday in the Rozsa Center of the Performing Arts. Once again host Joey Black welcomes a bevy of talented performers including Drag Queens Jackie Roberts, Mercedes Benzova, Harmony Breeze, Nova D-Vine, Cass Marie Domino and King Justin Case. At 11 a.m.

Sunday there is “Brunch with the Queens” at Canterbury House. This informal event gives everyone a chance to meet the performers without their makeup.

All week long there will be a brand new “History of Pride Week exhibit at the Van Pelt and Opie Library.
