The Portage Lake District Library will host a series of family programs throughout the summer presented by Isle Royale National Park and Keweenaw National Historical Park. Programs will be held every Tuesday, June 26 through August 21, from 1:00 – 1:45 p.m.
These programs offer adventures and activities that are suitable for families and youth ages five to twelve.
The first three programs celebrate our local Keweenaw heritage with “Cousin Jacks and Jennies: Cornish in the Keweenaw.” Participants are invited to join Ranger Katie Keller and explore what it meant to be a Cornish immigrant during the 19th century. After emigrating from Cornwall to the Keweenaw, kids will discover what it was like to work in an underground mine, learn about cultural traditions brought from the home country, and experience Cornish heritage in the local area today.
The programs are as follows:
Tuesday, June 26, 1:00 p.m.
Immigrating from Cornwall to the Keweenaw and Mining at Central
Tuesday, July 3, 1:00 p.m.
Cultural Traditions of the Cornish
Tuesday, July 10, 1:00 p.m.
Cornish in the Keweenaw Today
The other programs in this series will be announced later.
Library presentations are free and everyone is welcome. For more information, please call the library at 482-4570.
