The Portage Lake District Library invites everyone to visit the library and celebrate National Library Week from April 10 – April 15.
Programs that will be offered throughout the week are as follows:
Monday, April 10
GLDL: Free Streaming Video from Your Library, 3:00 – 4:00p.m.
The library’s popular eBook and audio book catalog, the Great Lakes Digital Library, now offers access to new and popular films. A presentation on how to stream movies from your computer, tablet, or Smartphone will be followed by an Overdrive help session. Library Director Dillon Geshel will present on using this resource. Bring your laptop, tablet, or Smartphone and any questions you may have.
Tuesday, April 11
The Foundation Center Directory: Grant Seeking Resources, 3:00 – 4:00 p.m.
As the only Funding Information Network for the Foundation Center in Houghton and Keweenaw Counties, the library makes available the most comprehensive database of grantmakers and their grants in the U.S. A presentation will detail how to use this resource.
Author Visit and Book Talk with Kristin Neva, 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.
Local author Kristin Neva will discuss her novel Snow Country. Set in the Keweenaw Peninsula, this inspirational novel features Finnish-American and Yooper culture and quirky yet endearing and wholesome characters. There will be a book signing and selling following the presentation.
Wednesday, April 12
Children’s Storytime and Craft, 10:15 – 11:15 a.m.
Young children are invited to a library themed Storytime. Kids will enjoy listening to stories and making their own book afterwards.
Film Night with the Copper Country Vegans, 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.
Join us in the Michigan Room for a screening of Eating You Alive: One Bite at a Time and learn how changing what we eat can change our lives one bite at a time. A discussion will follow the film.
Author Visit and Book Talk with John Smolens, 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award nominee John Smolens will discuss his latest novel, Wolf’s Mouth and will include details about POW camps in the Upper Peninsula. There will be a book selling and signing following the presentation.
Thursday, April 13

Investigate Caves with Ranger Val, 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.
Children and families are invited to participate in a “Cave Investigator” program! Test your speleologist skills, investigate cave formation, and explore features in your national park with Isle Royale National Park Ranger Valerie Martin.
Saturday, April 15
Building Adult Skills in Computing, 9:00 – 10:00 p.m.
Join Michigan Tech students and faculty for free computer and digital device assistance. Bring your own device or use the library’s public computers while MTU experts assist you with any questions you may have.
All Week
Fine Forgiveness
Donate nearly new books, DVDs or CDs and receive $1.00 in fine forgiveness per item donated during National Library Week.
Libraries Transform Communities Photo Challenge
Libraries transform lives and communities by providing access to technology, career development resources, and the skills to help people thrive in the digital age. Fill in a blank ‘speech bubble’ sign telling why libraries matter to you or your community. Your photo will be taken with your sign, and one selected winner will receive a $50 Keweenaw Cash Certificate.
