A $2,000 donation from the Portage Health Foundation (PHF) will help provide a better baseball experience for local youth. The foundation presented the check to the Keweenaw Little League Wednesday at Calumet’s Legion Field.

PHF Executive Director Kevin Store said these are the types of small grants from the foundation that go a long way. “It’s an asset that’s going to remain in the community,” said Store. “It’s not a one and done.  It’s not a donation that’s going to disappear in a month from now.  You’re going to have something that’s going to be lasting and that’s a reasonable investment.”

The money will be used to build a storage shed for the league’s equipment.

Keweenaw Little League President Jeff Erickson thanked the Portage Health Foundation for supporting local little league baseball. “Without donations like this and community involvement, we wouldn’t be able to have what we have here in these small towns so it goes a long ways to help out with getting the facilities the way we have them,” said Erickson.

League Vice President Joel Rastello says the money helps with more than just a shed but is part of an overall effort to provide a field for the kids. “We’ve been working on playing this field for several years now and we really thank the community for stepping up,” he said.  “This is a really nice field.  We call it the Field of Dreams and we are continuing to improve on it.”

Rastello added that they are working to make the field something the community can be proud of and the donation was a step in the right direction.
