Polar Bear Organizer for Heikinpäivä Needed, as Festival Returns

Heikinpäivä activities begin this week.

After two years off because of COVID-19 issues, the mid-winter celebration is back. Opening events include a two-part inkle band weaving class that starts Wednesday, and additional enrichment classes through the month.

While the schedule includes many of the traditional activities, Jim Kurtti of the Finnish Theme Committee says there are some popular events missing…

There’s two things that we’re not doing this year, simply because we don’t have people to do them, and one is the Polar Bear Dive. So, if somebody or some community wants to take that up, that would be wonderful. And the other is the Finnish Hymn Sing.

Anyone who wants to organize either of those events can contact the Finnish American Heritage Center.

The Family Fun Night and Hobby Horse Hoedown will take place January 20th from 6:00 until 8:00 at the Finnish American Heritage Center.

Heikinpäivä will conclude January 28th, with the parade through downtown Hancock, the tori, and the outdoor games at Quincy Green, and the evening dance and light buffet at the Finnish American Heritage Center.
