Plans for New Houghton Donut Shop, Pot Retailer Advance

Projects for a new coffee shop and another marijuana retailer in Houghton are a step closer to proceeding, after the city’s planning commission approved their site plans last night.

The marijuana shop will be located in the former Bambu Restaurant on Ridge Road. Owners say they’ll employ around 20 full-time and part-time workers, and will take steps to mitigate the odor frequently associated with such establishments.

A combined Dunkin’ Donuts/Baskin Robbins outlet will take the place of the former Hardee’s restaurant on Memorial Road. The existing building will be demolished, and replaced, and exterior lighting will be upgraded.

Both site plans will be forwarded to the city council for final approval.

Two smaller projects – one at Flowers by Sleeman, and one at Houghton Building Supply – were also greenlighted.

City Manager Eric Waara also informed the commission that the Little Caesar’s Restaurant on Montezuma Avenue will be reopening under new ownership.
