Plane Falls Through Ice On Lake Superior

A plane broke through the ice on Lake Superior near Torch Lake Township Sunday afternoon.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office says they received information shortly before 3:00pm that an airplane had broken through the ice off White City Beach.

The pilot of the 1946 Taylor Craft told authorities that he was getting ready to taxi down the ice when the skis on the aircraft broke through the ice.

The pilot was able to exit the plane and walk to the shore. There were no injuries in the incident.

Emergency crews were unable to pull the aircraft from the water at this time because it slipped deeper into Lake Superior.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by Bootjack Fire and Ice Rescue.
