Petition Language To Recall Calumet Village President Ruled Unclear

The language of a petition to recall the Calumet Village President is unclear.

That ruling was made by the Houghton County Elections Committee at a Clarity Hearing Wednesday regarding the recall petition against village president Dave Geisler.

The petition sponsor Craig Kimmer gave testimony concerning the recall petition accusing Geisler of providing false financial records to the Village of Calumet Finance Committee on three occasions and at a village council meeting in 2017.

Kimmer said those records led to the village needing to adopt a deficit elimination plan later that year.

Geisler admitted to making an error in providing the records but disputed that the error had any bearing on that year’s budget and that it led to needing a deficit elimination plan.

The Committee voted 2-1 to reject the language on the petition.

Kimmer is able to resubmit a new petition, if he chooses.

Calumet Village residents will still be asked to vote on a recall for trustee Virginia Dwyer and both village and township residents will vote on whether to dissolve the village in the November election.
