Open To Renegotiation–Hancock School Board Votes To “Non-Renew” Principal’s Contract

Hancock Public Schools are making changes to the way contract extensions are handled in regards to their administrators.

The Hancock School Board of Education held a special meeting Monday where they voted to non-renew the contract of High School and Middle School Principal Ezekiel Ohan.

The move comes after consulting with the school district’s attorney, who advised them that their contracts would automatically renew unless the board takes prior action to avoid doing so.

Current Superintendent Kipp Beaudoin is stepping down this June so no further action was required on his contract.

In a previous meeting, the board requested that the district’s two remaining administrators agree to a change in the wording of their contract from “non-renew” to “non-extension.”

Elementary School Principal Dan Vaara agreed but Ohan declined.

School Board President Dale Kero explained the board’s decision to “non-renew” is the next step to possibly renegotiating a new contract with Ohan when his current contract expires in June 2020.

The board also appointed Vaara to follow Beaudoin as interim superintendent this summer until a replacement has been hired.

Vaara previously served as interim superintendent following the retirement of Monica Healy until Beaudoin was selected.

The district is still accepting applications for superintendent until May 10th.
