Old Time Dance Draw Big Time Crowd

Friday night’s Old Time Copper Country Dance drew a big crowd to the Finnish American Heritage Center.

The evening was a fundraiser for the Kivajat Youth Dance program, and the several groups it sponsors each performed during the event.

Kivajat director Kay Seppala said the money raised will help pay for the group’s trip to the Portage County Cultural Festival in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, on May 13th…

It’s an amazing event, with 30 different international groups, folk dancing, traditional arts, international foods, crafts for kids, very familt-friendly.

Seppala says this will be the group’s fourth appearance at the festival…

They love to have us come because, first of all, we’re children performing, and second of all, we represent the Nordic countries, and I think we might be the only group coming that represents the Nordic groups.

Seppala and others at the dance noted that events such as this underscore the importance of keeping the Finnish American Heritage Center open, even as Finlandia University closes…

I think this building here represents the Finnish America, but not just that, it’s a way of encouraging other ethnic groups to maintain their traditions, too.

The national Finlandia Foundation, which is not related to the university, has announced plans to continue support of the center and its programs.
