The Western U.P. Health Department has confirmed that surface water samples collected at inland lakes and Lake Superior beaches are continuing to show signs of improvement.
Seventeen beach locations are now open and nine additional are open with advisories.
The beaches now open to swimming are Bete Grise, Calumet Waterworks, Clark Lake, Copper Harbor Marina and Hunter’s Point in Copper Harbor, Eagle Harbor, Eagle River, Fort Wilkins State Park, Lake Gogebic State Park, Grand Sand Bay, Lake Medora, L’Anse Waterfront, Little Traverse Bay, McLain State Park on the Lake Superior side, Porcupine Mountains State Park, Second Sand Beach, and Twin Lakes State Park.
Beaches under advisory are Agate Beach, Bergland Township Beach, Chassell, Dollar Bay, Portage Lake in Houghton and Hancock, Rice Lake, Big Traverse Bay, and Sunday Lake.
The public is advised to swim at their own risk at these beaches and to avoid swallowing water while swimming.
Twelve other beach locations still have high levels of E.coli and/or fecal coliform bacteria and are closed.
These beaches will be resampled prior to the weekend.
