Number Of Closed Beaches Down To 10

Almost there, the majority of beaches in the area are now open as conditions continue to improve following two floods in the last few weeks.

As of yesterday, the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department has only ten beaches listed as closed.

Closed beaches include Agate Beach, Bobcat Lake, Chassell, Copper Harbor Lighthouse Overlook, Dollar Bay, Dreamland Campground, Gogebic County Park, Torch Lake in Lake Linden, Misery Bay, and the Ontonagon County beach on Lake Gogebic.

Eight other beaches are currently under advisory—Bergland Township, Calumet Waterworks, Gogebic State Park, Gratiot Lake, Hancock Beach, Ontonagon Township on Lake Superior, Rice Lake, and Twin Lakes.

All other beaches, including the Houghton side of the Portage Canal, are currently listed as open.

Just be aware that conditions do change and the Health Department is continuing to test surface water samples.

Visitors should check the Health Department website before heading out for any changes.
