Novel About Copper Country Legend Named Michigan Notable Book

An historical novel about a legendary leader of the 1913 copper strike has been named one of Michigan’s Notable Books for 2020.

The Women of the Copper Country by Mary Doria Russell recounts the story of “Big Annie” Clements, a young housewife in a troubled marriage who became the public face of the strike, leading parades with an oversized American flag, and touring the nation to raise support.

The book is one of 20 titles selected by the Library of Michigan that were published last year, and represent the stories and culture of our state. The books must be about Michigan, set in Michigan, or be written by a Michigan author.
