A film by the Copper Country’s favorite Finnish director will screen at the Finnish American Heritage Center on Thursday, January 11 at 2 and 6 p.m. as this month’s installment of the Nordic Film Series.
“The Fencer” by Klaus Härö, which was Finland’s entry as the Best Foreign Language Film for the 2015 Oscars, tells the story of a young man who fled Russia to Estonia to evade the secret police. He finds work as a teacher and founds a sports club for his students, where he starts teaching them his great passion – fencing. He learns to love the children, many of whom have been orphaned as a result of the Russian occupation. When the children want to participate in a national fencing tournament in Leningrad, Endel must make a choice; risk everything to take the children to Leningrad or put his safety first and disappoint them.
”The Fencer” is the most recent by Härö, who is also the director of past Nordic Film Series favorites “Mother of Mine” and “Letters to Father Jacob.” The film is appropriate for all ages and is about 1 hour and 40 minutes long.
