NMU Grad Assistants Want Insurance, COVID Assistance

Graduate teaching assistants at Northern Michigan University want more support from the school during the COVID-19 pandemic.

An online petition is calling for the school to provide health insurance for grad assistants, enable them to work remotely in more instances, and provide hazard pay when they must perform their duties face to face.

Grad assistant Tori Rego told ABC 10 that the petition has collected 600 signatures in just a week… but the university hasn’t responded…

“We want to have that dialogue, but they haven’s sat down at the table with us to listen to the concerns of graduate employees in relation to the petition.”

In addition to the tuition waiver they receive for the classes they take, grad assistants at NMU receive a $9,000 annual salary, with no additional benefits.
