New Voting Equipment Being Used Again

Voters in Houghton County are being asked for their patience when they head to the polls on Tuesday.

New voting equipment will be in use at all 31 precincts in the county for only the second time.

Houghton County Clerk Jennifer Lorenz says voters will be provided a Sharpie for filling out their ballot.  People voting by absentee may continue to use pen because the ink will have plenty of time to dry before their ballots are tabulated on Election Day. Red pens and pencils cannot be used at all on the ballots.

When voters are at the tabulator to insert their ballot, we ask that all voters wait until the machine states their “ballot has been cast”.  This tabulator now scans a picture of the ballot which can be used for possible canvassing in the future.  Voters will also be alerted by the tabulator for any errors in voting.  This improvement helps to make sure every vote counts and this equipment gives the voter the opportunity to fix any errors.

Lorenz said all of the City & Township Clerks in Houghton County appreciate every voter’s patience Tuesday. If anyone has any questions, she asked them to contact her at (906) 482-1311 or (906) 482-1150.
