The big news for the Hanka Homestead Family Heritage Day on August 20 this year is the demonstration of the restored (and operational) 100-year-old hit and miss engine.
Most all homesteaders in the area would have used such an engine for a myriad of chores, especially for buzzing up a winter’s supply of firewood.
Volunteers from Hanka will be demonstrating how the engine was utilized on the farm.
The Fourth Annual Hanka Homestead Family Heritage Day will be on Saturday, August 20, beginning at 1:00.
Payne Chassen, metal artist, will be demonstrating blacksmithing techniques for making tools, horseshoes, and parts for various machines on the farm.
Marcia Slater and Shirley Kinnunen will be demonstrating home water bath canning techniques that would have been utilized by the Hanka women.
In addition, Milton Salo and Paul Heikkila will demonstrate the uniquely Finnish technique of making double dove-tail joints for log construction.
And, chicken husbandry on the homestead will be explained by Jake Putala.
The Kivajat and Loistavat Dance Troupes will be performing their beautiful and lively dances at 2:30.
The concession stand will be selling refreshments, including hot dogs & bratwurst and all the trimmings, homemade nisu, chips, candies, and soft drinks.
It all will culminate in a traditional bonfire at approximately 4:30, with some traditional Finnish music performed by Raimo Aamu Kinku (also known as Randy Wakeham).
Admission is $5 for adults and children are free. Come join us for an afternoon and step back in time!
