The city of Houghton is considering moving the Verna Mize Park to a more appealing location.
The park was set up in 1981 to honor Houghton native Verna Mize following her efforts to stop a mining company from Minnesota contaminating Lake Superior.
The park is currently located next to a parking lot alongside M-26 just west of downtown Houghton. It contains a small rock display with a specimen of float copper and other small rocks from local mines.
Houghton City Manager Eric Waara says the park is often criticized for its location next to the highway, which has been expanded since the building of the park.
Waara said they are looking at some possible spots along the waterfront where the park would be more accessible to the public.
