National Nurses Week

May 6th through the 12th is National Nurses Week, and UP Health System Portage is taking part in the celebration.

The story of how National Nurses Week came about, starts in 1953, when an employee of the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, Dorothy Sutherland, suggested a national day of recognition for nurses.

After numerous proclamations and resolutions, the American Nurses Association and the U. S. Congress, established May 6th as National Nurses Day in 1982.

The ANA expanded it to a week in 1991, and two years later designated May 6th through the 12th as the permanent annual dates for National Nurses Week.

Ryan Heinonen, Chief Nursing Officer at UP Health System Portage said this, regarding their nurses.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, May has been dubbed National Nurses Month, and the World Health Organization, has declared 2020 as the Year of the Nurse.
