Multi-Vehicle Accident Causes Shutdown Of Seney Stretch

The Seney Stretch along M-28 in Schoolcraft County was closed for several hours Sunday due to a multiple vehicle crash and whiteout conditions.  Troopers from the Michigan State Police Negaunee Post say the accidents happened about 5 miles west of Seney just after noon.

Police say a westbound Subaru driven by a 67-year-old man from Traverse City rear ended a westbound Ford pickup truck puller a covered trailer that was driven by a 41-year-old man from Thompson, Ohio.  After the initial collision, the Subaru then crossed the centerline and was broadsided by an eastbound Buick, driven by a 52-year old man from Royal Oak, Michigan.

The Traverse City man, a 65-year-old woman who was a passenger in his vehicle, and a 52-year-old woman riding in the Buick were seriously injured in the crash.  All three were taken to Helen Newberry Joy Hospital for treatment.

Police say the crash occurred on slippery snow covered roads with reduced visibility due to the falling and wind driven snow.

The crash caused a chain reaction with other motorists who came upon the crash suddenly.  A total of 8 vehicles were damaged with numerous other vehicles going into the ditch to avoid collisions.

As a result M-28 was closed for 3 hours between M-77 in Seney and M-94 in Shingleton.  The road is now open.
