Michigan Tech has begun composting its food waste.
Tech Today reports that a composting unit has been installed in the Wadsworth Hall kitchen. It’s about the size of a washing machine, and can process up to 250 pounds of food in a 12-to-15-hour cycle.
The result is a dry, granular product that’s more than 80 percent lighter and smaller than the original waste. Tech students are studying how it can best be used as fertilizer around campus.
The project is still in its early phase, and only food waste from kitchen preparation is being used. Officials hope to include leftover food waste from the dining room once dining activities return to normal.
