Michigan Tech’s Research Funding & Expenditures Highly Ranked

Michigan Tech will enter 2017 with a lot of reasons to celebrate.

At the university’s final Board of Trustees meeting of the calendar year, the board heard a presentation about the funding and expenditures of Tech’s research.

MTU Vice President for Research David Reed said, “Through the first quarter of the year, our federal research funding is up substantially. It’s up 40 percent over the first quarter last year. Our total research awards are almost 29 percent. So, a very good start to the fiscal year.”

Tech finds themselves ranked number one in the state in research expenditures for environmental science, atmospheric science and oceanography.

The National Science Foundation recently ranked Michigan Tech 116th in the nation for research expenditures.

With all this success, what’s next for the university?

Reed said, “When you’re looking at the work we do, which is focused on defense and basic science through the National Science Foundation and our applied research with industry, we see a very bright future. The work we do is critical to the needs of the nation and the world and the state, and we’re very much looking forward to continuing on.”

The Board also approved room and board rates and apartment rent for the upcoming academic year with an average increase of 1.81 percent.

Though still an increase, it’s roughly half the average increase over the last five years.
