A Michigan Tech student has won one of the nations highest awards for college undergraduates.
Kaylee Meyers, a third year biomedical engineering major, has won the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship.
Meyers is only the 12th Michigan Tech student to win the award.
The scholarship was established in 1989 to honor the late Arizona senator.
The scholarships are given to college sophomores and juniors, and are based on academic merit, research experience and intent to pursue a career in science, engineering or mathematics.
Meyers said her research focuses on injectable biomaterials that could be used to accelerate wound healing in injured tendons.
Now that she’s won the scholarship, Meyers can apply it toward tuition, books and room and board for her senior year.
