College Magazine has ranked Michigan Technological University the safest college campus in the nation, in a ranking released this week of the 10 safest college campuses.
“These 10 campuses have gone above and beyond to make safety a priority, the magazine’s website says. “Their campus safety initiatives, sexual assault programming and student orgs devoted to safety keep their campuses as idyllic as the brochures promised. Not to mention, their low crime rates and high freshman retention rates prove their methods work.”
The magazine’s website cited a long list of safety programs at Michigan Tech, including Resident Officer Program, R.A.D. (Rape Awareness Defense), National Night Out, Fire Safety Day, Safe Walk, Operation I.D., Bicycle Registration, Alcohol/Drug Awareness presentations, Lunch With The Law Program, Personalized Safety presentations, Residential Life monthly meetings, Staying Safe at Tech presentation, RA Training program and the Sexual Assault and Violence Education (SAVE), Dial Help, Safe Walk, It’s On Us, Love is Respect, Know Your Title IX and Michigan Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence (MCEDS).
The magazine noted that Michigan Tech’s crime rate is 53 percent lower than the average for college campuses.
“Earning the distinction as the #1 Safest Campus is truly gratifying,” said Chief of Police Brian Cadwell. “It is a testament to the sense of commUNITY shared by all campus constituents. It is truly the result of a strong partnership between Michigan Tech and the broader community, which we will continue to cultivate going forward.”
