Nearly 1000 Students and one United States Senator were awarded their degrees over the weekend on the campus of Michigan Tech.
The university held its Spring Commencement ceremony Saturday at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena, where more than 200 graduates were awarded a master’s degree and 49 graduating students receiving a Phd.
Among the more than seven hundred graduating students to receive a bachelor’s degree was this year’s student speaker, Jaylyn Williams- Boone, receiving his degree in finance.
This year’s Commencement speaker was U.S Senator Gary Peters who was also among those taking home a degree. University president Glen Mroz presented Peters with an honorary Doctorate of Philosophy.
During his speech, the senator commended MTU for its record breaking enrollment in recent years and credited the university for its involvement in making the Keweenaw Peninsula a “world class innovative shore.”
Peters was elected in 2014 and is currently serving his first term in the Senate. He sits on several committees including the Senate Armed Services Committee, and the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.
