Michigan Tech Archivist Elected To National Board

An archivist at Michigan Tech will now serve as the incoming Vice Chair/Chair-Elect to the Oral History Section Steering Committee for the Society of American Archivists.

MTU’s Lindsay Hiltunen was appointed to the position and will serve a three year term.

Hiltunen has been an active member of SAA for several years, has presented at the annual meeting, and was previously a member of the Society’s Legislative Research Team, a subcommittee of the Issues and Advocacy Section. She has been very active in oral history theory and methodology throughout her professional career.

Recent projects at Michigan Tech include collecting oral histories for the Black Voices – My Michigan Tech Experience project and the Mine Memories project. In addition to her recent appointment, she also serves as a board member for the Michigan Oral History Association and has presented oral history best practices and theory to the Society for International Hockey Research and the Finnish Oral History Network in Helsinki, Finland.

The Oral History Section of SAA is composed of members of the Society and others who are interested in or are actively engaged in conducting oral history interviews and/or teach oral history methodology. The Oral History Section Steering Committee directs and coordinates the activities of the section and approves appointments made by the chair if vacancies occur. Committee members approve the annual program, sponsor SAA sessions, contribute to the newsletter, establish and maintain liaisons with other professional organizations, and act as advocates for oral history within SAA and the profession at large.

Founded in 1936, the Society of American Archivists is North America’s oldest and largest national professional association dedicated to the needs and interests of archives and archivists. SAA represents more than 6,200 professional archivists employed by governments, universities, businesses, libraries, and historical organizations nationally.
