Michigan Tech and NMC to Create Engineering Pipeline

The following press release was issued by Michigan Tech writer Mark Wilcox:

In the next step in a commitment to northern Michigan’s Grand Traverse region Michigan Technological University and Northwestern Michigan College (NMC) will formalize a new partnership on Wednesday, Aug. 7.

Michigan Tech President Richard J. Koubek and NMC President Timothy J. Nelson are expected to sign seven new articulation agreements that expedite degree completion and reduce the cost for engineering students transferring to Michigan Tech from NMC. The signing ceremony will take place at 3 p.m. (EDT) at Lobdell’s Restaurant on NMC’s Great Lakes campus, 715 E. Front Street, Traverse City, Michigan.

Under the 2 + 2 agreements, which take effect with the fall 2019 semester, engineering students will be able to complete their first two years of study at NMC and then transfer to Tech with junior status. In addition to cost savings for engineering students, officials say the agreement will create a pipeline of engineering students from the Grand Traverse Region to Michigan Tech.

Students who participate in the 2 + 2 program could potentially save tens of thousands of dollars on the cost of their bachelor’s degree.

Wednesday’s signing is the result of more than a year and a half of work between the two public institutions and builds on a history of collaboration going back nearly 30 years.

In March, Michigan Tech announced a three-year Memorandum of Understanding designed to explore collaborative opportunities in the Grand Traverse area. The memorandum included exploration of educational opportunities and services with and through NMC.
