A pair of memorial services will be held this Sunday at Evangel Baptist Church to mark the one year anniversary of the flood.
Emergency Manager Jon Stone says is meant to help help people to remember all that was lost. “There was a lot of heartache early in that day so we want to have a space that’s just set aside—a time to remember,” said Stone.
The service will also pay tribute to the Markham family, whose 12-year-old son Thatcher lost his life in the aftermath of the storm.
Stone says the second aspect of the service will be one of thankfulness. “I remember that morning waiting to hear that we had lost a lot of people,” said Stone. “Just the magnitude of the disaster and the ferociousness of the flowing water and the fact that it happened so early in the morning, I expected there to be many more people that were badly injured or who had died.”
Another reason to celebrate, said Stone, was the beauty of how the community came together to help each other.
Two services will be held, 8:30am and 10:00am Sunday, June 16th, at 1114 College Ave, Houghton, and everyone is invited to attend.
