Memorial Scholarship Honors Hancock Man’s Love For Golf

Keweenaw Community Foundation (KCF) and the Gappy Golf League are awarding a college scholarship in memory of former Hancock resident, Jack Eberhard, a valued community member. Jack enjoyed most sports, particularly football, golf, and tennis. The Jack Eberhard Memorial Scholarship pays tribute to Jack by providing financial assistance to students from Hancock and Houghton High Schools who have participated in 2 or more years of high school golf.

Jack was born and raised in Kalamazoo, MI, where he was an honor student and a member of his high school’s football and basketball teams. After attaining his teaching certificate, he taught kindergarten thru eighth grade at the one room school house in Copper Harbor, MI. He also held teaching positions in other Michigan cities: Marquette, Midland, and Martin. After his teaching career, he owned a printing company called The Book Concern in Hancock, Michigan. His spirit of community service led him to serve on several local organizations. He will be greatly missed in the community.

An anonymous donor will provide a match of up to $5,000 for the Jack Eberhard Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship will go to a high school senior from Hancock and Houghton High Schools that has participated in at least 2 years of high school golf. The student should have plans to continue his/her education at an institute of higher learning (not necessarily a golf program).

Selection will be made by two members of the Gappy Golf League, two members of the Keweenaw Community Foundation’s Grant Committee and one manager of the Portage Lake Golf Course. These will be appointed by KCF’s Board of Trustees.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Jack Eberhard Memorial Scholarship Fund can be made to the Keweenaw Community Foundation, 236 Quincy St., Hancock, MI 49930.
