Memorial Day Services Will Honor The Fallen

Memorial Day honors the men and women who died while serving in our country’s armed forces, protecting the freedoms we enjoy today.

There are several observances planned throughout the Keweenaw this weekend.

You’ll find a list of many of those services on our Community Calendar page.

At 9:30 Monday morning in Ahmeek, a service will be held at the Veterans Honor Roll on US-41, across from the visitors center.

Bill Hannon, commander of the Mohawk American Legion Post No. 230, will conduct the service along with a color guard from the post.

The guest speaker will be Iraq and Afghanistan combat veteran Michelle Kovachich, who is now a readjustment counselor with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The Calumet High School band will perform a medley of patriotic songs, and the Calumet JROTC will also take part.

In case of rain, the service will move indoors to the American Legion Hall.

Following the service, the public is invited to the Legion Hall for a coffee and doughnut social.

At Fort Wilkins Historic State Park in Copper Harbor on Monday at 10am, there will be a ceremony on the parade grounds.

The program will feature Students from the Copper Harbor School and a special Memorial Day address.

Refreshments will be served following the program.

Also at 10am at the Evergreen Cemetery in L’Anse, Willard Coffey will deliver the address, and Courtney Jones and the L’Anse High School Band will perform.

Participating veterans should assemble at 9:45. In case of rain, the service will be moved to Meadowbrook Arena.

The ceremony is presented by American Legion Post 144 and VFW Post 3897 of L’Anse.

Following the ceremony, a wreath will be laid at Keweenaw Bay, across from the post homes.
