MDOT to Share Details About M-26/Silver River Bridge Rebuild Today

Plans for the rebuild of the M-26 bridge over the Silver River between Eagle Harbor and Copper Harbor will be shared at a public meeting this afternoon.

Officials from the Michigan Department of Transportation will host the session at 3:00 at the Eagle Harbor Township Office.

MDOT’s Dan Weingarten says deterioration of the bridge was noticed more than a year ago…

One of the stone walls on that historic bridge has been slowly moving, so to maintain a safe situation there, we’ve had to block off one lane.

Because of its intricate stonework, the bridge is listed as an historic structure. Weingarten says they looked for a way to save it, but replacement was the only option…

We will try for a bridge that has a similar look. The new bridge is going to be longer, and wider, and actually span the entire river, instead of the current situation is a stone culvert, that kind of channels the river.

Some elements of the original bridge will remain…

What we’re going to do is retain some of that stone, and build an interpretive sign and marker using some of the stone on the bridge. There’s also some stone steps leading down to the river that we’re going to preserve.

The only available detour is via US-41, which will add many miles for some travelers. Because of that, MDOT plans to work quickly…

We’ve got an accelerated schedule, so in 10 or 12 weeks we hope to have the new bridge open and carrying traffic up to Copper Harbor.

Construction will begin as soon as weather allows. The project is expected to cost around $3 million.
