One of Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s budget transfers will continue an ongoing problem in the western Upper Peninsula.
At one time, pensions for Michigan Works program state employees were paid for through one of the counties in the various consortia, with money provided by the state. In our six-county consortium, that was Gogebic County.
In 2015, the system was changed – but the state didn’t provide Gogebic County with the money needed to fulfill the employees’ pension obligations.
