Governor Gretchen Whitmer spoke directly to Republicans near the conclusion of her first State of the State Address Tuesday, expressing her willingness to work across the aisle on auto insurance reform.
Senator Ed McBroom says that acknowledgement is a step in the right direction. “I think that it becomes more and more clear as every day and month and year goes by that Michigan’s auto insurance situation is at the top of the list for needed reform and at the top of the list for available reform that will return some money to the people.”
The very first bill of the new legislative session—Senate Bill 1—seeks to lower auto insurance rates by offering more insurance options while ensuring accident victims have the medical care coverage they need.
“I’m glad that we are no longer just talking about reform in vague terms but were saying it has to save the people money.”
Studies show Michigan drivers pay the highest car insurance rates in the country, averaging more that 80 percent higher than the national average.
