Marquette Schools Consider Nickname Change

A public forum on a potential nickname change for the Marquette High School sports teams drew 60 speakers, and lasted three hours last night.

The Redmen and Redettes names were inspired in the early 20th century by the crimson sweater worn by a district superintendent who had graduated from Yale University.

In the 1930s, a stereotypical image of a Native American wearing a headdress was adopted. Even though the image was officially dropped 20 years ago, some feel the racial stigma remains.

The Marquette Board of Education is considering alternatives.
