Markkanen’s plan helps foster care students pursuing the skilled trades

State Representative Greg Markkanen is looking to expand scholarship opportunities for foster care students who participate in skilled trades training programs.

Currently, Michigan students must attend a university, four-year college or a community college at least half the time to be eligible for the Fostering Futures Scholarship.

The scholarship provides eligible foster youth with funds for tuition, fees, room and board, books, and supplies required for enrollment.

Markkanen introduced a plan that would add students attending skilled trades institutions to the list of those eligible for the scholarship.

“As a strong advocate for the skilled trades, and career and technical education, this plan helps students pursuing their education in new and innovative industries,” said Markkanen. “This scholarship gives students who have grown up in the foster care system the opportunity to succeed and help them pursue a career they have confidence in.”

The bill has been referred to the Families, Children, and Seniors Committee.
