State Representative Greg Markkanen is proposing that Michigan change its official state bird…
Kirtland’s warbler was listed as an endangered species in 1967, after being driven nearly to extinction because of reduced habitat in and around Roscommon County.
Restoration of suitable habitat was combined with successful efforts to trap cowbirds, which pirated the warbler’s nests, and destroyed their eggs. It was delisted from the endangered species list three years ago, although efforts to monitor the population continue.
Kirtland’s warblers have also recently been sighted in the Upper Peninsula.
The bill has been referred to the House Committee on Government Operations.
