Marijuana Grower/Seller Woos Hancock

A company that’s trying to build recreational marijuana facilities across the state has its eye on Hancock.

At last night’s city council meeting, Tranquility Fields Vice-President of Business Development Scott Dianda said the group has taken an option to purchase the former hardware store at 224 Quincy Street.

The goal would be to tear down the old building, and replace it with a marijuana microbusiness…

Dianda said the new building would look somewhat like a fast-food outlet, with onsite parking.

They have developed a modular design that could be built quickly, and would eliminate many concerns people have about retail marijuana facilities…

The business would be franchised to a local owner, and would employ a dozen people – potentially some of the students who will soon start graduating from the cannabis programs at Northern Michigan University and Lake Superior State University.

The company is not requesting any tax breaks or other investments from the community.

Dianda said Tranquility Fields is also considering locating the business in the city of Houghton or Portage Township.

None of the three jurisdictions currently allow recreational marijuana businesses, but all are reviewing potential ordinances that could change that.

Hancock Mayor Paul LaBine asked the city’s ad hoc marijuana committee to look further into Tranquility Fields’ proposal in advance of January’s council meeting.
