March For Science Planned For Saturday

People who love science will be gathering this Saturday to march across the Portage Lake Lift Bridge.

Organizers say the theme of the march is the Great Lakes watershed and how scientific research is used to protect and maintain the important services and connections the Great Lakes provide.

They say they want to show their support of using scientific evidence to inform policy at all levels of government.

The march will be preceded by hands-on science activities and demonstrations at the Portage Lake District Library at 10:30am.

Marchers will then gather under the bridge on the Houghton side at noon, march across the bridge into Hancock and back.

They will follow that up with a community action meeting at the library at 1pm, focusing on impacting policy decisions.

Saturday’s local march is affiliated with the national march in Washington D.C. and all the other marches for science throughout the world.

Here is the March for Science Press Release:

Who: People who love science in the Houghton-Hancock area

What: March for Science — Houghton

When: Saturday, April 22nd, 2017, noon

Where: Under the Portage Lake Lift Bridge, Houghton side

The March for Science — Houghton is a non-partisan event that recognizes our diverse communities. The Copper Country’s residents grow our roots in our natural resources and we are enriched by Lake Superior. Our watershed’s lands, rivers, and lakes bring us together, for sustenance, recreation, and spirituality. The Great Lakes are our home. Our strong connection unites the protection of the lakes to ensure the health and well-being of both residents and ecosystems. Join us on Saturday, April 22, at 12 p.m. to march in support of using scientific evidence to inform policy at all levels of government. Marchers will gather under the lift bridge, on the Houghton side, and march across the bridge, into Hancock, and back. The theme of the march is the Great Lakes watershed and how scientific research is used to protect and maintain the important services and connections the Great Lakes provide.

Join us before the march for hands-on science activities and demonstrations led by students and educators from the area. Afterwards, we will capture the momentum from the march and discuss how to channel it into action at a community meeting open to the public. We will focus on issues pertinent to our community. Everyone is invited to participate in any combination of the day’s events.
