Man Shot by State Police Trooper

A 68-year-old man is hospitalized in critical condition after having been shot by a Michigan State Police trooper.

State Police officers and Marquette County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a house on Crusader Street in Gwinn just after 4:00 yesterday afternoon to check the well-being of the man.

Troopers say that he responded by shooting at them through a window. As they repeatedly asked him to put the gun down, he fired several more rounds both inside the home and through the window toward police.

He finally stepped outside the house, carrying a long gun. Officers say the trooper shot him as he was attempting to point the weapon at police. The man’s identity has not been released.

The trooper, whose identity has also not been released, has been placed on administrative leave.

The MSP and the Marquette County Sheriff’s Department continue to investigate the original case. The MSP’s Seventh District Investigative Response Team is reviewing the officer-involved shooting. The results of both investigations will be turned over to the Marquette County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
