Main Street Calumet Receives Grant from Keweenaw Community Foundation

Calumet, Michigan – Main Street Calumet is the happy recipient of a $421 grant from the Keweenaw Community Foundation Historic Preservation Fund. The grant monies will be used to fund the stabilization project at 512 Portland Street, otherwise known as the Curto Saloon in Calumet.

The structure which was deteriorating has been brought back to life with a new roof and partially rebuilt foundation.  The project which cost $43,000 was largely funded through a grant from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) with a 10% match made up with funds from River Valley Bank, the Keweenaw Community Foundation Historic Preservation Fund, the Village of Calumet and Main Street Calumet.

The effort to stabilize this structure was the work of the Bring Back Calumet Task Force, a multi-agency organization formed in 2016 to address historic preservation in Calumet.  The Task Force is headed by Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance (KEDA) and composed of representatives from Main Street Calumet, the Village of Calumet, Keweenaw National Historic Park and Houghton County. The building is owned by the Village of Calumet Downtown Development Authority (DDA) and is available for sale. Interested parties should contact the Village of Calumet Administrator.
