Mackinac Bridge Remnant Visits South Pole

A piece of the Mackinac Bridge has made its way to the South Pole.

Brendan Fisher recently began a 13-month assignment as a heavy equipment mechanic for the United States Antarctic Program. He brought with him a sign that he crafted from a piece of the original metal deck grating he purchased at a state auction in 2020.

The sign proclaims the distance from the South Pole to the Mackinac Bridge at 9,394 miles.

While the sign did travel with Fisher all the way to the South Pole, it will be set up permanently at one of the USAP’s facilities on Antarctica.
