Long-Term Care COVID Cases Ease Locally

The COVID-19 outbreak at the Mission Point Nursing Home in Hancock may have run its course.

With 52 resident cases reported over the past month at the 63-bed facility, no new cases were added last week. The latest report submitted to the state does include five new resident deaths that occurred last week, bringing the facility’s pandemic total to six. Five additional staff members were diagnosed last week.

The only other extended care facility in Houghton County to report new cases last week was Canal View, which recorded seven among residents, and three among staff members.

Bayside Village in L’Anse, which was hit hard a few weeks ago, reported two additional deaths, bringing the pandemic total to 25 at the 59-bed facility. No new cases were reported among residents or staff. Aspirus Ontonagon’s Long Term Care Unit similarly reported no new cases among residents or staff.

While still very high, diagnosis rates across the state continue to drop. The seven-day rolling average fell to 3,631 yesterday – almost half of where it was a month ago. The death rate has held steady, though, with the seven-day rolling average at 111 per day.

Diagnosis rates also continue to drop in the Copper Country, with Baraga County now the lowest in Michigan. Wisconsin border counties, though, continue to be among the highest in the state.
