Many students from the Copper Country are among those calling for an end to gun violence in schools by participating in Wednesday’s national school walkout.
Some 200 students at Houghton High School and Middle School took part in the protest.
Around 10:00am, the students left their classrooms and gathered outside where they honored the victims of the Florida shooting, which left 17 students dead one month ago.
Senior Daphne Maki was among those students calling for change. “We had signs with each of the victim’s names of them and a little bio about them and it was really, really moving; and 7th and 8th graders were also involved, and seeing so many middle schoolers even so moved by it to tears was really inspirational,” Maki said.
Efforts will continue on March 24th with a planned March For Our Lives beginning in Houghton, to coincide with the national march in Washington D.C.
