Local Organizations Take Part In National Prevention Week

This week is SAMHSA’s National Prevention Week as communities and organizations across the country are helping to raise awareness about the importance of substance use prevention and positive mental health.

Houghton/Keweenaw Communities That Care and Baraga County Communities That Care are focusing on prevention for youth, working with the UP Coalition Network.

“National Prevention Week is a chance to put prevention in the spotlight,” said Gery Shelafoe, organizer of UP Coalition Network. “We want to get upstream of the problems young people are facing, and prevent risky behavior before it starts. This is a great time to find out what the CTC coalition in your county is doing, and how you might be able to help. We have a new website with information and resources at www.UPCNetwork.org.”

There are many ways community members can join the efforts to create safer, healthier communities for youth.

Parents, professionals, leaders, and even teenagers themselves are getting involved locally to make a difference.

Whether you want to become a member of your coalition, volunteer at events, or just share social media content to spread the word, there are many ways to help out.

To get learn more or get involved, contact Chris Schuldt at 906-482-8701 or visit www.HoughtonKeweenawCTC.com. They have a Facebook page at www.Facebook.com/hkctcup.
