Local Ministry Expands Addiction Recovery Program

A Keweenaw treatment program will soon be broadening its horizon’s as it aims to help those struggling with all types of addiction.

Dawn of a New Day is a ministry that focuses on addiction recovery and while its current programs cover substance abuse related addictions, the nonprofit organization is adding a new program that includes treatment for other dependencies.

Rev. Roger Jenkins has made it is mission to change lives in the Keweenaw Peninsula.  “You know the problems that we have with addiction. It’s in our neighborhood, it’s right in our back door but that’s alright. This s a good place to be,” said Rev. Roger Jenkins.

Jenkins is an advocate for those struggling with substance abuse and looking for a better way.

“I know it sounds strange, but for a while there, the church itself was feeling kind of blah. Since we’ve collaborated with Pastor Jenkins, the building itself is feeling happier again,” said Minister Elaine Hendrickson of Our Savior Lutheran Church, who provided office space and a new home to his program.

Part of the rehabilitation program involves reeducation. Jenkins says that the church has recently received a pledge of four computers that will soon be used as education workstations.

Jenkins said, “A person coming out of treatment, he can come here. He can go on one of these computers. He can learn how to operate a computer and get an education, and then get a job.”

The Reverend is currently already involved with support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, and his new program is entitled Celebrate Recovery and is currently accepting new members.

Jenkins said, “And it deals with all kinds of addictions from alcohol, drugs, overweight, gambling, any addiction you want, we’ll deal with it.”

Jenkins makes himself available to members of his program as he understands that often times a friendly listener is all it takes to prevent a relapse.

A fundraiser ham dinner is being held this weekend with proceeds benefiting the ministry. That event will be held at the South Range Elementary School from 4 – 7 pm.
