Local Law Enforcement to Participate in Drug Takeback Day

Local law enforcement organizations will be taking part in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day Saturday.

The goal is to remove unwanted, unused and expired prescription medications from homes, and dispose of them appropriately.

Unused prescriptions can fall into the hands of people who might abuse them. Disposal into household trash can cause environmental contamination.

Between 10:00 and 2:00 Saturday, most unexpired medications may be brought to the following locations:
• The Houghton County Sheriff’s office.
• The Michigan Tech Public Safety office.
• The Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Department.
• Any Michigan State Police Post.

Most medications will be accepted with no questions asked. Liquid medications, along with syringes and other sharps typically cannot be accepted.

While Saturday’s event is designed to focus on the problem of unused prescription drugs, opportunities for safe disposal are available year-round. Michigan State Police posts accept solid medications weekdays between 8:00 and 4:00. The Houghton County Sheriff’s Department has a 24-hour drop box. The Western Upper Peninsula Health Department accepts unwanted or used syringes and other sharps.
