Part of a series of local events planned in conjunction with the traveling display of “Jacob Riis: How the Other Half Lives” will be held at the Calumet Public Library on Wednesday.
Author and historian Bonnie Yochelson will present “Jacob A. Riis, Gilded Age Advocate for Social Justice” at 6:30pm.
Copies of the book Rediscovering Jacob Riis: Exposure Journalism and Photography in Turn-of-the-Century New York, will be available for sale and the proceeds will go to support efforts of the Friends of the Calumet Public Library. This book will be discussed at the library’s public book club in September.
A separate History on the Hill event will be held Thursday at the Quincy Mine.
This panel discussion will compare and contrast photo-journalist Jacob A. Riis’ use of photographs to illustrate the plight of impoverished residents at the turn of the century to the conditions here in the Copper Country during the same period.
The main traveling exhibit will be on display at the Calumet Visitor Center September 2nd through October 20th.
The Quincy Mine Hoist Association will host the Riis exhibit in partnership with the Keweenaw National Historical Park Advisory Commission and National Park Service.
